Night of the Demon (1980)

Welp! for the penultimate episode of this season, the penultimate episode of our 5th anniversairy celebrations AND the last ‘Red Triangle’ of the season to boot! I figured i’d have to go all out and honestly, I dont think I could be happier with this one, Tony from the Video Nasty Project agreed to join us on this one and im BEYOND grateful he dropped by for this one!

Over on his channel he’d previously reviewed this one and mused that he felt the film was poorly represented and thats why it got such a bad rep, at the time it was only available as a VERY ropey transfer dumped on tape in the 80s and disc in the early 2000’s.

Well, when Severin and 88 films announced a ground up remaster from the original elements. I got in touch with Tony in a heartbeat and asked if he’d be interested in re-evaluating and man. he really bought his all to this one.

A genuinely great way to tie things off, a fun exciting movie and a reminder to myself of exactly why I do these things. with only 1 more review to go before we round the season off. we’re hitting the highs now!

I always felt the original artwork was a bit muted, this is much MUCH better.

Love Camp 7 (1969)

“Love Camp 7” is a bit of a strange one really…while I can see the appeal of some of the later Nazisploitation films; This one being held up by the BBFC as a film “Too shocking to release” even in 2018 is really weird to me…I mean it feature by the nazis (But nothing worse than whats in any other Nazisploitation film) It features Rape (But nothing anywhere near as graphic as “I spit on your grave” or “Irriversable”) and for the most part its actually just quite a dull viewing experience…the only angle I can see being played here is that where as most rape revenge films end with the heroine getting her revenge and killing the evil men. This film kind of ends a bit open. its fair to say the Nazi’s get a decent amount of commupence. But from my memories it doesnt end in a definitive way.

Not that I’d actually try to seek out this film even if it did see an official relase. Its a very boring and vanilla title really…As a piece of history its interesting because it still stands as one of the last remaining relics of the “Nasty” era of british home video…but beyond that? meh…I’d still argue that the worst Nasty I’ve see to date was “Cannibal Holocaust” and thats largely because of the real life animal mutilation thats included throughout.

Non the less I managed to secure an australian copy of this film and while the film may not be worth it This review did give me the opportunity to really talk about the “Video Nasty” era of domestic video and it helped me to better improve my own understanding about these kinds of films and just how baffeling some of there choices were…This also served as my first season Finale (I went for a much shorter 12 episode season run at first; rather than the now more typical 18-19 episode season run.)

(Again; It really must be said. a massive amount of these films were sold due to how they marketed the the film poster alone…I mean…Just look at it!)

American Ninja 2: The Confrontation (1987)

American Ninja 2 (Often released with the subtitle “The Confrontation”) was a sequal to the original American ninja movie which came out in 1985. This is one of the few times I’ve spoken about a films sequel before I’ve delt with the original and there are a few reasons for that that were fairly tedious but basically boiled down to “When I started this channel I was only going to talk about Janky B-movies and experimental/erotic films” and the first American ninja movie is actually pretty good. its a bit slow in places but its fun enough…this film was a bit more unusual and weird and I thought at the time it would fit my channels tone a bit better. It may have also been down to the fact that i’d watched the first one only a week or 2 before I decided to start my channel in the first place and I really didnt feel up to rewatching a film like this so soon after i’d watched it for the first time. This was also the first episode I recorded for the second ever group of episodes I made 🙂

(I’ll be honest; im a sucker for a ninja film that features genetically modified super ninjas)

EDIT [22/01/21]:

So At some point around 18 months ago, for reasons youtube cant fully explain to me, a glitch happened on my youtube channel scrubbing approximately 8 minutes of footage from the Above American Ninja review. I worked with them over a couple of days to try and retrieve it. But as far as they were concerned it has sadly been lost. So! I decided to try and put this right. In part because I plan to cover more American Ninja films on my channel in future, and in part because I actually kind of like this review. Im not massively fond of my early work (As most youtubers will atest after a certain period your ‘early works’ come with a healthy dose of cringe at what you could have done better/differently.

So I decided to rebuild the review! I luckily keep the original isolated vocals of every review I make and, while doing some frame matching for the review itself I sourced better quality copies of the footage, I worked on the layout, processed the audio and generally tidied the whole thing up to make it look and feel a lot more in line with my current reviews. I wouldnt say it was a ground up remake. more that this is a 2.5D reimagining of a 2D review. it’s just a bit more polished. AND it brings the review back from near obscurity! So I hope you enjoy this; it didnt take a particularly long time to put together, but I felt it needed doing! 🙂
